My Journey from the Royal Navy to Local Plumbing and Heating

Hello, I’m Owen Green of Green Plumbing a plumber and heating engineer based in Shobdon, near Leominster, Herefordshire.

After finishing my service as an engineer in the Royal Navy in 2004, I began a new chapter ashore and started my plumbing apprenticeship. Following several years of hard work and study, I achieved my NVQ Level 3 Advanced Plumbing qualification and went on to gain over ten years of hands-on trade experience.

That experience opened doors — and a sense of adventure. I took the opportunity to work at sea again, this time as a marine engineer, travelling across the Mediterranean, Caribbean, and Asia. Working in engineering roles aboard vessels for more than a decade gave me invaluable technical knowledge, attention to detail, and a deep appreciation for doing things right the first time.

After years of continuous travel, I’ve now chosen to settle back home and redevelop my plumbing and heating business here in Herefordshire. I’m approaching it the same way I’ve approached every job — methodically, carefully, and with pride in good workmanship.

For now, I’ve decided not to renew my Gas Safe or OFTEC registrations, as I feel there’s plenty of rewarding work in general plumbing, heating maintenance, and bathroom installation without directly servicing gas or oil appliances.
I do, however, plan to renew my G3 unvented hot-water cylinder certification, which will allow me to continue working safely and compliantly with unvented systems.

After years travelling the world, it feels good to be home — working locally again, meeting new customers, and putting my skills back to use in the community I care about.
